"Psychotic Disorders Associated With Epilepsy"

Dear mates,

Today, Monday, in order to start a new debate I have found suitable to choose, as well as Diana did in the first post, an item related to the exciting world of Psychiatry.

This is an article published on February 4, 2016 by the author Fahad Salih Algreeshah (MD Head of Neurology Unit, Department of Medicine, King Saud Medical City) and updated to the Medscape website. The full article talks about “Psychiatric Disorders Associated With Epilepsy” and I wanted to focus more specifically on Psychotic Disorders. Here you have the link if you first of all want to take a look to engage in this issue:

The reasons why I have chosen this passage are, in the first place, having dealt with an illness such as psychotic disorder up close, with the example of my grandmother. On the other hand, I also know a girl who at the age of 18 was diagnosed with Epilepsy and her first manifestations were the disconnection from reality and thinking that her parents and sister were not who they claimed to be. I found this topic very interesting because I had not found any article up to now which has directly related these two diseases and I was also surprised by the fact that there is a higher risk of developing Psychotic disorder for those suffering from Epilepsy.

Most people believe that mental disorders are rare and “happen to someone else”. In fact, mental disorders are common and widespread. Moreover, most families are not prepared to cope with learning their loved one has a mental illness. It can be a physically and emotionally trying time and can make us feel vulnerable to the opinions and judgments of others. What is your opinion about psychiatric disorders? Do you know someone affected by a mental illness? Have you suffered the consequences of this disease closely? And, in my opinion, the most difficult question to be answered: what do you think is worse, going through any other organic disease being aware of it, or waking up one day having forgotten your identity and believing that anyone can betray you, even those who would give up their lives for you?
